Who can resist a good Christmas movie during the holiday season? There’s a plethora of options to choose from, including classics like Love Actually, Elf, Miracle on 34th Street, Gremlins, and the ever-controversial Die Hard (yes, it is a Christmas film).
Two other must-watch films are Home Alone, featuring Macaulay Culkin, and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (which some may argue is a Halloween movie). Either way, both movies offer unique perspectives on the meaning of the festive season.
While some might argue that it’s too early to start watching Christmas films (though there are only 61 days left), others have just discovered a fascinating connection between Home Alone, released in 1990, and The Nightmare before Christmas, which came out in 1993.

An Instagram account recently posted a series of stills from Beetlejuice one and two, Home Alone, and The Nightmare Before Christmas, captioning it: “We’re coming up to Catherine O’Hara season.”
Many were surprised to learn that Canadian actress Catherine O’Hara, 70, provided the voice for Sally in The Nightmare Before Christmas and also portrayed Kevin’s mother Kate McCallister in Home Alone. One person commented: “I was today years old when I found out that she played Sally.”
The revelation that Catherine O’Hara was the voice behind Sally in The Nightmare Before Christmas has left fans flabbergasted on social media. One user declared in astonishment, “Wait! Catherine O’Hara is Sally? ! ? ! How can I be a big NBC fan and a big CO fan and not know this?!?!”
Another confessed to harboring a false belief, commenting: “I would have sworn under penalty of perjury that Sally was voiced by Shelley Duvall. I’m gonna need a minute on this one…” While another simply expressed their amazement, exclaiming, “She was SALLY?! Mind blown.”
Catherine O’Hara trivia was exchanged among the posts, as users pointed out her dual roles in The Nightmare Before Christmas, where she also brought the character Shock to life. An enthusiastic fan shared, “Pee-wee Herman was Lock, and Danny Elfman was Barrel! And the guy who played Otho in Beetlejuice was the mayor!”.
Intrigued by movie soundtracks, someone noted the musical intersection between two classic films stating: “Reused Melody Home Alone and The Nightmare Before Christmas. I never knew till now the beginning musical intro of Home Alone (John Williams – Somewhere in my Memory) uses the same melody used in The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
This theory sparked debate, with many unable to discern the similarity despite listening to the snippets. However, one believer supported the claim saying, “Here is music from home alone. The second melody played sounds like ‘this is Halloween, this is Halloween’.”
Fans were asked to join the conversation with their thoughts and favorites: “Did you know that Catherine O’Hara voiced the character of Sally in The Nightmare Before Christmas? What are your favourite Christmas and Halloween movies to watch? Let us know in the comments below.”
