Chiefs reportedly replacing Carson Wentz with beloved ex-Pro Bowler image

The Kansas City Chiefs obviously are set with their starting quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes arguably is the best quarterback in football and has shown no signs of slowing down at all. He’s also just 29 years old. It almost feels like he’s become underrated at this point, but the Chiefs have made three straight Super Bowls and won two of them.

In 2024, the Chiefs had Carson Wentz behind Mahomes as the team’s backup. He was a very solid pickup who could’ve stepped in if Mahomes ever got hurt or anything of that nature. It’s unclear where he will be in 2025, but the Chiefs made a move at the spot on Thursday. The Chiefs reportedly signed former Pro Bowler Gardner Minshew II, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Sources: Free-agent QB Gardner Minshew reached agreement today on a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs,” Schefter said. “A new backup for Patrick Mahomes.”

Minshew is a six-year NFL veteran and was a Pro Bowler in 2023 as a member of the Indianapolis Colts. He was a member of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024 and had an up-and-down year.

Minshew has been beloved across the league since his career began with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s been loved for his intriguing lifestyle and now will bring a solid veteran presence behind Mahomes with plenty of starting experience if anything were to happen to Mahomes.

Hopefully, that isn’t the case, but Minshew is certainly a solid guy to have.
