When Melissa Rivers tied the knot with attorney Steve Mitchel at the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on March 15, 2025, she ensured her late mother, Joan Rivers—who passed away in 2014 at age 81—was part of the celebration in several heartfelt ways.Melissa Rivers and Steve Mitchell wedding in Jackson Hole, WY on March 15, 2025. “My mom’s pin was tucked into my hair with a bobby pin,” Rivers, 55, shares with PEOPLE. She and Mitchel recently lost their home in the Palisades Fire on January 7, and she was overjoyed to discover the pin had survived. “I thought it was gone in the fire, but while going through the vault inventory at our jewelry company in New York, I realized it was safe there,” she explains.

The long, diamond-encrusted floral brooch held deep meaning. “I didn’t know they hadn’t sent it back to me yet, and I was heartbroken thinking it was lost. We had it shipped out, and it arrived just in time for the wedding. I also wore my mom’s ring, which I managed to grab before we evacuated,” she adds.

To pay tribute to Joan, guests were invited to wear a small golden bee pin attached to the napkin at each table setting. The bee was a symbol close to Joan’s heart, defying nature’s odds. A note alongside it read, “Their bodies are too heavy, their wings too tiny. Yet they fly!” Joan believed everyone could achieve the impossible every day.Melissa Rivers Marries Steve Mitchel in Jackson Hole Wedding Ceremony

The couple exchanged vows in front of 150 loved ones at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. “We adore Wyoming,” Rivers says. “We initially planned it at Hf Bar Ranch, a spot my family’s visited for 16 years, but logistics got tricky. Since we love skiing, we figured a destination wedding should be something most of our group could enjoy and build their week around—so people arrived early and stayed late to hit the slopes.”

She adds, “The idea was to keep it intimate with close friends by making it a destination event. And it all came together perfectly.”

Though the wedding went smoothly, Rivers told PEOPLE in 2024 that she missed having her mom’s input during the planning. “Oh, she’d have taken charge, and I miss that. For my first wedding, I just asked, ‘When do I need to show up?’” she recalls, referencing her 1998 New York wedding to John Endicott, which ended in 2003 and gave her a son, Cooper, now 24.

“She’d say, ‘Do you want this or that?’ and make it clear which was the ‘right’ choice, though she’d roll with it if I picked the other,” Rivers says. “But I think she’d be a bit shocked at how laid-back this one was. No fancy embossed invitations with calligraphy like ‘Mrs. Edgar Rosenberg requests your presence at her daughter’s wedding.’ Nope, it was more like, ‘Hey, we’re throwing a party, and a ceremony might happen at some point.’”

She continues, “Mom threw the best parties, though. She obsessed over tablescapes, adored fine china, and added special touches to everything. If guests got cookies to take home, the ribbon would have a little extra flair. Everything was meticulous and perfect—she loved that.”

Still, Rivers has no regrets about keeping this wedding relaxed. “You know what? We pulled it off,” she says. “People mingled, laughed, and by the end of the night, strangers felt like lifelong pals. Who knew almost everyone could behave so well!”

Reflecting on what she misses most about her mom, Rivers told PEOPLE last year, “I miss laughing with her. The inside jokes, our shared history. I miss calling her—or her calling me—and saying, ‘Can you believe so-and-so did that?’ and knowing she’d get it instantly.”
