Twenty-five years ago today, Drive Me Crazy landed in U.S. theaters. But even before the 1999 teen rom-com starring Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier opened, it was already a pop cultural phenomenon, its soundtrack having spawned a massive hit with title track, “(You Drive Me) Crazy” by Britney Spears.

While the film itself was a modest success at the box office, it was definitely a late ’90s moment, epitomizing the teen “poptimism” that defined the end of the decade. And at its Los Angeles premiere in late September 1999, young Hollywood came out to celebrate.
