The actress was upset by people who objected, even threatened to release nude photos of her, just because she spoke out in favor of women’s rights.
On August 3, appearing in a live chat on Facebook to promote the HeForShe gender equality campaign and International Women’s Day, the “British rose” recounted her difficulties in speaking out for feminism. “After my speech at the United Nations, a website threatened to release nude photos of me. I knew it was fake. I knew the photos didn’t exist,” she said while sitting at Facebook’s office in London, England.
In September, as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, the actress gave a speech calling on men and women to join forces to advance the status of women and achieve gender equality. She was immediately criticized on the 4Chan forum, with some anonymous people even creating a website with a countdown timer indicating when they would release nude photos of Emma.
“I think a lot of my relatives understand that gender equality is an issue but they don’t know how urgent it is. They say: ‘We live in the UK, it’s a thing of the past. We’re fine. Our lives are good. We have all the rights.’ So the moment they saw me stand up and talk about feminism and get threatened, they were really shocked. My brother was very disappointed. The truth is that women are being threatened. I was very angry too. I feel, this is the reason why I continue to speak up for women,” the actress shared.
